New delhi:Sikkim is the smallest state in terms of population in India which is located in the northeastern part of the country. Sikkim is bordered by Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet, and hence it’s one of the favorite tourist destinations in the world, undoubtedly. Being the gateway to the Himalayas, Sikkim is known for its beautiful scenery, green meadow, crystalline lakes, and towering mountain ranges.

In 2010, the state launched the “Organic Mission”, an action plan defining the measures to implement to reach the target of converting the entire state to organic after which Sikkim became the first fully organic state in the world in 2015. Organic farming is considered the agricultural system closest to the traditional Sikkimese way of farming, which is rain-fed with low external inputs. Sikkim beat 50 other nominated policies to win the Gold Award for its State Policy on Organic Farming (2004) and Sikkim Organic Mission (2010), which have enabled it to become the first 100% organic state in the world. That’s right – all of its farmland is certified organic. Overall, the transition to 100% organic has benefited more than 66,000 farming families.

In 2003, Sikkim stopped imports of chemical fertilizers in the State and since then the cultivatable land there is practically organic and farmers of Sikkim are traditional users of organic manure.

Sikkim sets an excellent example of how other Indian states and countries worldwide can successfully upscale agroecology.
